Okay, that might be a little bit of an exaggeration but really, a lot of people just can’t go through their days without having their handy and trusty cellphones nearby.  How many persons do you know who get all agitated and restless for the simple reason that they left their trusty cellphones at home?  They panic, they feel frustrated and their day is just basically ruined because their mobile phones are nowhere near them.

This kind of affliction – if you can call it that – affects a majority of people from all over the world, regardless of age, sex, culture or those belonging to any other demographic profile. 

Before cellphones came, there were pagers; before there were pagers, there were just the usual telephone lines; and before there were phones, people communicated through telegraph and mails sent by post.

The most important advantage of cellphones of course is that they have made communications anywhere in the world so quick that no matter the distance, people somehow managed to stay in each other’s lives – keeping up-to-date with the latest events and basically just being in the circle.

Before there were cellphones, people had to wait for days, even weeks to exchange news via snail mail.  Sure, one can always make a call but if the person is thousands of miles away; overseas phone calls can be pretty costly.

Thanks to the mobile phone technology, people get to trade messages no matter how far away they are from each other via SMS or Short Messaging System/Short Message Service – text messaging in more popular terms. 

Today however, cellular phones have gone far beyond text messaging and mobile calls.  One after the other, special features have been included to the regular cellular phone in order to give more services to the subscribers. 

From phone calls and SMS, camera features were included and then music players followed; internet capability soon followed suit; wireless internet connection came after; and then online chatting; sending and receiving electronic mails plus other online applications were all thrown in for good measure.

As if that wasn’t enough, you can now also view your favorite videos and movies; and likewise watch your favorite television shows.  Suffice it to say, cellphones have developed from simple communications gadgets to total entertainment packages in a small and very compact portable box.
